Salt Lake City Utah Aug 2006
On to the 2nd leg of our trip. We are headed to Salt Lake City to visit Family. My wife's cousin lives about 30 minutes from several ski lodges on the east side of Salt Lake. The mountains are so beautiful they almost look fake.
We got up Sunday and headed up the mountain to Alta ski area. On the drive up the mountain we saw a deer and then a huge moose. The moose was very close to the parking lot for the trailhead. What a site. He must have been shy because he would not face us and I was not about to go down to him and make him stand up.
It was a nice clear day and temperatures were going to be in the 80's but we got an early start. The trail starts at 8000 feet and we went to a peak at over 11000 feet. I thought my lungs were going to burst a couple of times. The elevation really takes a toll on you when you are not used to it. Of course it doesn't help to not be in shape as well. Marshal rides his 10 speed up this same road to the ski lodge and back down. He does lots of training in the mountains and some racing so it was no big deal for him. His son Graham didn't even breath hard ever. That's just not right!!
The views were spectacular to say the least. There were flowers everywhere at the lower elevations. We kept scanning the mountains for mountain sheep but had no luck. Debbie was on this same trail 1 week earlier and saw a heard of them on a large slope.
After the hike we had lunch and headed to Park City ski area. Park City is where the 2002 Winter Olympic games were held. We had good timing even though the rain clouds were coming in because there were a few guys going down the mini ski jumps, doing acrobatics into the pool. Those guys were good. After that we headed into the Museum for a look around. A great day was had by all.
