W.E.ROCK-Pro Nationals- Rock crawling 04-9-06 Globe Arizona
I attended my 1st ever WEROCK-Pro Nationals event on Sunday, April 9th in Globe Arizona. It will definitely not be my last. These guys ROCK. You think we are crazy for some of the stuff we ride over on our quads, but it is nothing compared to what these drivers can do with their awesome machines. The engineering that goes into these machines is unbelievable. To give you some idea they can steer with either the front or rear or both, plus they can lock the brakes on whichever wheel they need to so they can spin the buggy around instead of having to use reverse. It cost them 1 point every time they use reverse. The shocks are also independently controlled by hydraulics. They can raise or lower the suspension with a toggle switch.
This event is very fan friendly. It was held in a natural wash and the judges set up about 10 different courses. The drivers and spotters were all extremely friendly as they were standing with the fans watching their fellow competitors attack each course. I could hear Roy in my head all day. "Oh Crap, Oh Crap. How the heck are we supposed to get up that." This was almost fun as riding. I must have put on 50 miles of running up and down the hills and from one event to the other. I did like the rock wall the best as you will see. ( I think it was B3)
The 1st roll over in this series of photos happened as I was just getting close to the buggy. You will notice I only have the front of the buggy in the photo. I left this series in so you could see how close to the action you can get. I was taking the photos at 35 MM as it flips it comes to rest less than 10' from me. I was surprised I kept shooting with it coming at me. My favorite photos are from the top of the rock. Some of the drivers were getting so upset they couldn't make it up this wall that they were just hammering the throttle until they went over. There was defiantly no lack of effort by any of the drivers. As the drivers either rolled or made a great save the crowd would roar with approval. It was an incredible experience with all the action and sounds of engines roaring.
They only come here a couple of times a year 1 event in Congress and 1 in Globe. Be on the lookout for next year I will.
