Forest Lakes 07-08
We went to Forest Lakes for the 4th of July Weekend. Colleen and Beau went with us in our camper. Larry and Pat were camper a few miles away and come over to visit us briefly.
The weather was nice and cool which was a welcome relief from the summer heat in Phoenix. The 4 of us went for a ride on the quads to the Chevlon Lake overlook. The women enjoyed the ride as well as the terrific scenery.
Our friend Jeffery A Christ (azgolfer) rode his Harley up to our camp site on Saturday morning to go for a ride with us. I had an extra quad for him to ride. Larry rode over to be our guide. He was going to show us the way to get from the Forest Lakes side of the canyon down to Chevlon Lake. It was a beautiful ride. I have tried to find this trail several times and as it turns out I missed the trail by a few yards. You cross the river below the spillway which happened to be dry at the time. Larry said he has been there before and the water was quite high but they were able to cross, but coming back the water was too high to get across. They had to go further down stream and find another spot to cross. Now that would be fun. There were some fun places along the way for a little fun plus we stopped at the lake. As we left the lake we just had to go up the trail to the gate because it was full of boulders and ledges. Everyone was following me and wondered what I was doing until I turned around. I said we were here so we had to go up and down this fun trail.
After a break at camp Jeff, Beau and myself went off to find a hill climb past the rock garden. We had a blast on the Yamaha Wolverine 450 taking turns going up and down the trail. The more I ride that quad the better I like it. After this we headed to the power lines where I knew there were some even steeper hill climbs. Along the way it started to just pour. We stopped under some trees for a while but soon decided to move on because it looked like it was not going to stop raining. It would have been ok if we had rain gear (I did in my quad but didn’t think it was fair for me to pull it out) but we didn’t. In fact we were in T shirts. The rain was very cold as we headed back to camp. We were all soaked when we arrived. Larry had brought Pat to see us but she wouldn’t even give me a hug? I don’t know why. They had a wet ride back on Larrys Polaris X2 in the rain as well.
The rain didn’t let up until very late so Jeff spent the night as well. He was up at 6AM to hit the road on his Hog.
I went for a walk with our dogs Zoe and Molly in the morning because I heard Elk calling. It wad awesome walking in the forest as all the trees and bushes were full of water and shinning in the morning sunlight. We almost got on the Elk but I had to call Molly and I heard them run through the forest. On our way back to the camper I heard a huge pack of Coyote’s just off to out right. I kept the dogs clost and kept them moving back to camp. About 5 minutes later they were yipping wildly again just ahead of us to the right. They sounded very close but I never saw them.
Once again we had a blast camping. Jeff's photos are at the end as well.
As it turns out this was our dog Zoe’s last camp trip as we had to put he down about 3 weeks later from a large tumor on the throat.
