Tale of The White Mountains Trail Day2 06/06

Day 2 started early 5:00AM. I woke up Roy from his toy hauler to take him out to see some elk and to get the shakes out of him. Roy loves to ride and if there is daylight (or not) he wants to be in the saddle. We did about 20 miles and came back for breakfast before heading out for our good ride. We hade the same riders for today except Scott joined us on his new BRP 650 Max.

We headed out for a 40 mile loop on forest service roads to the town of Nutrioso. On the way to the town we stopped to take a look at Rogers Lake which is named after Hank Rogers family. What a beautiful area. The town of Nutrioso is very stunning as well. There are lots of beautiful log homes in the area. We came back to camp had lunch and then saddled up for a ride we had been waiting for.

Hank Rogers had given us some trails he thought we would enjoy. This trail was called Horton Creek. It goes over the mountains to Hannigan's Meadow. On the way to the trail head I saw an antelope along the way. I have seen big horn sheep in the same area last year. The trail is gorgeous. It is very tight with vegetation. The trail switchbacks up the side of the mountain and has blue spruce and aspens galore. There were a few spots where trees had fallen over the trail which made it even more interesting. There was one spot that we jumped over a fallen log that was a blast. It was pretty much a tie between Robert (400 BRP Max) Greg (350 Honda) and me (Polaris 500) for the highest wheels in the air. We hit about the top of the mountain it thundered with lightning. We were all hoping for a good rain to get rid of the dust but we only got a sprinkle.

Well we arrived at our destination Hannigan's Meadow for a break. After a rest we headed out on the power line trail. We weren’t sure how close to the fire it would be but Hank said it would be a fun ride. The trail was just getting interesting when we ran into a Hotshot Fireman on the trail. He said they had the fire contained but he would have to call to see if we could continue on this trail. After some radio communications he said the area was closed so we turned around. (must be the FS was listening to the radio as well) We headed back to camp on the main roads over the mountain again. On the way back Roy, Greg, Vidwiz and I took a side trail to see if I could find an old cabin I went to before. We found it but it had fallen down.

As we arrived back at camp we were told by Jeff that the FS Ranger Jim Martin saw them on the main road an came skidding to a halt, (Jeff Jr thought he was going to hit him with his truck) and said "man you guys are hard to catch, I have been looking for you all afternoon" We didn't know we were even Outlaws. He explained that they had shut down all the trails for riding. The only trails that we were to ride on are numbered FS roads. That kind of put a damper on things but we luckily had already done the best trails.

In just one day we turn a family of five into outlaws. Converted a wonderful easy going woman into a hard core hill climbing, tree jumping, and rock rambling Ranger mom. Only thing that could have been better if it would have rained like 3 inches every day.
