Rogers Trough 02-16Thru19-07 Camp Out
We went out to Rogers Trough area again camping for Presidents Day weekend. The weather was great even though it was cloudy on Sunday. We had 4 campers and a few extras that stopped by for the day. We are so lucky to live in an area of the country that we can camp and ride year round. The kids and dogs had an absolute blast.
On Saturday a few of us did the Rogers Trough Loop. This is an easy ride for everyone plus the scenery is incredible. It was nice to have my wife along on a ride with me again. The top was a bit windy and cool but the snow was all gone. There had been some rain a couple of days before we went so the dust was down to a minimum. After the loop Jim, Art and I went to play on the trails in the wash. There was a few places that had your attention to say the least. There was some good boulder crawling as well as some fun sand washes.
It was my Son from another Mother's Birthday so we had a cake to celebrate. I don't think the kids like cake at all. NOT!!!!!
Sunday morning we did the trail over the middle of Rogers Trough to the road over by the cabin. This is a fun road that winds across the tops of the mountains. It is steep and loose at a few spots so it will make you keep your eyes on the trail instead of the scenery at places.
After getting to the main road Art and the teenagers headed back to camp. Montana Jim and I thought we would try one of the roads we saw from the top of the mountain to see if it was the one I had been on before that goes to Superior. As we rounded a corner there was a quad that was in the creek bed with a guy trying to hook up a tow strap to it. I guess he went off the cliff which was about a 30 foot plus drop off. We went to see if we could help. The guy that was driving said he lost control (going to fast) and went over the cliff. Thank goodness he bailed at the top. The quad landed on it's wheels in soft sand. It hardly had a scratch on it . He was hooking a tow strap to his quad that they were going to hook up to the winch in the rear of the Rhino so they could pull it straight up the cliff. Jim went to the bottom and said "why don't you just drive it out?" They said "can you do that?" That's when I threw Jim his helmet. I said "if Jim says he can ride it out he WILL ride it out." I went down to spot Jim on the real off camber sand and get some photos. It was nothing to ride it out even though it was a Honda Rincon 350 2 wheel drive. It just needed a little coaxing on a few of the boulders. They were amazed at how easy it came out. One of them said "do you guys do this all the time"? Jim said " No we don't go over cliffs".
With our good deed done we headed out on the trail to the east. There were a few spots where the trail had been washed out but not bad. This trail took us again to the tops of the mountains. It looked and smelt like rain and I forgot to put in my rain gear. At least I had an extra sweatshirt because it was again cool at the top. We could see the open pit mine near Globe. That was quite a site. Then within another couple of miles we came across another mine. This we found out was a calcium carbonate open pit mine. It was all fenced off but as we were looking over the fence a female security guard drove over to check us out. She was very nice and a historian to boot. She gave us the history of this mine as well as the one in Globe and the one at Oak flat which is where the road we were on came out. She said the holes in the bottom if the mine were where they drilled to put in dynamite on Monday so they could blast. Oh well we didn't make it to Superior and had to back track but it was a great adventure.
What a fun trip again with Great friends.
