Punkin Center To Young 06-03-06 W/ Deputy White
Once again we had an excellent adventure. The riders for this run were Greg (TSGreg), Mark (Cowboy), Kurt, (1st run on his new Honda TRX450R) and Don (Azquadrider). With the heat index reaching 110+ in the valley we were trying to get to higher elevation so we decided on the Punkin Center to Young run. We had a late start, I guess someone couldn't get up early? No me as I got up at 4:00 Am and was waiting for the group to pick me up. We arrived at Punkin center at about 8:45 to find Wild Bill, Garret and Garret's dad unloading. (sorry I forgot Garret's dads name) Bill was on a single track as his Polaris is still waiting for parts.
Off to the trails. Kurt was on a brand new Honda TRX450R. This was to be its virgin ride. It turned out to be a good one. The temperature was nice but warm as we headed out on the trail. The nice thing about this area is you climb out of the desert to pine trees within about 8 miles. We took a couple of fun side trails and had to move fallen trees or go over them, but they dead ended. We had a good time climbing over fallen logs until Mark could not get his King Quad over one large log. He was freaking out when a branch was poking through his floor board as he was trying to back up. He and Greg had to lift it off the tree. The good thing is the King Quad has rubber floor boards unlike Polaris floor boards so they were not damaged. By now it was lunch time and Mark wanted to go into Young to show Kurt Antler Inn. We had a good lunch at the Inn and headed out to the E side of town to head down to Cherry Creek. We put Kurt in the middle because he was not street legal yet. As we found out THIS DOES NOT WORK. I was in the back of the pack and noticed in my mirror a Police vehicle behind me. I looked at my Speedo and I was right on 35 which is the speed limit. He went around me and pulled in behind Mark. Same thing. He went around Mark and pulled in behind Kurt and the lights came on. Kurt also did not have a mirror on so the Sheriff had to turn on his siren to get him to notice him. At this time we were at the dirt road to take us to our trail. Deputy White asked Kurt for his license, registration, and proof of insurance. Well you know from here, no street legal registration and no insurance. He also asked Greg for his information and asked Greg if he knew how fast he was going. Greg said yes right on 45. He then said is that what you clocked me at? Deputy White replied Yes. The problem is the speed limit is 35. Oh!!! Well he ran them in his computer and came back handed Greg his license and asked Kurt to choose which ticket he wanted. Speeding, no street legal registration, or no proof of insurance. After some discussion he choose speeding because he could go to school and not have it on his record. At this point I asked Deputy White if he would handcuff Kurt for a photo or frisk him. He would not but had fun with it. After the ticket he asked, where is your truck. Punkin Center was our reply. He then informed Kurt that he would let us hit the trail but he could not ride on the Young Highway. If he or another Deputy caught him he would throw the book at him. He knew we planned on coming out at Broad Tree so we had to find another route back to the truck or leave Kurt go get the truck and drive around probably 50 miles each way. You can't blame the Deputy. He was right Kurt was wrong. He did cut him a big break.
From here we had a fun ride. We came across deer in 2 areas. One ran in front of me within about 20' This first part of the trip is very rough and I'm sure Kurt was dying on his sport quad. We were trying to find the Indian ruins on Cherry Creek. No luck even though Roy had given us the coordinates. We were running late because of our late start and Deputy White. Greg and I were in the back of the group, I saw a road down to the creek and took it followed by Greg. We had a blast. This area is like slide rock. Small water falls and slick rock. Greg was driving along in the water and his quad almost disappeared on it’s side. I had a hard time getting a photo because I was laughing so hard. He powered through that hole and fell in another one on the other side. What a blast. I tried to climb up a water fall but couldn’t get any traction. I got my front wheels up but they were in the air as I was high centered. By now it was time to put in in high gear and catch up with the other 2 to find a way back. I could have stayed in this area for hours it was so beautiful. Oh well, that’s another ride.
We blasted our way back but it was very late by now. As we came down into the desert the temperature was up but not to bad because it was almost dark. Another successful Adventure.
Things to remember.
1. If you are not street legal don't ride on the roads. By the way why wouldn't you be, its inexpensive and if your quad is stolen from you house it is not covered by your homeowners insurance.
2. Polaris rules over Suzuki King Quads when it comes to climbing over fallen trees and through water.
3. If you ride a sport quad with us even though we are not doing a hard trail you will pay for it. When we ended our ride Kurt could barley lift his arms.
4. Always bring extra water. Sometimes you have to share.
5. Sorry RoyD we only put on 111 miles before it was starting to get dark. Wish you were there.
