Moab Ut Hells Revenge 10-26-06
If you have never been to Moab Utah you are missing one of the best places in the country to ride quads, single tracks, bikes, or Jeeps. Make sure you put this on your list as a must do areas and it is only an 8 hour drive to get there.
For day 1's Adventure the riders are (visco-daddy) Roy, Greg, Done Daddy, Montana Jim, Jeff Henson, and me (azquadrider). We gathered at my house for a take off time of 3:15 AM. It sure seamed like a long 8 hours on the way there. We were all excited about the upcoming adventure.
We made it to our Hotel at 11:00 AM. They are 1 hour behind us. After checking in we headed to Hells Revenge for a nice afternoon ride. Hells Revenge is a beautiful area with lots of slick rock. They call it slick rock but the traction is incredible. You enter Hells Revenge right alongside a rock called Lions Back. This you may remember seeing on TV where a Blazer lost their brakes and came crashing down the rock and landed head first into the sand. Fortunately they all survived. Myself, looking at Lions Back there is no way I would go up that rock. There are several intimidating long steep climbs and decants at the first of the trail to get your blood pumping. After the hill climbs there is an overlook of the Colorado River. The LaSalle Mountains with their tops full of snow are gorgeous in the background. The trail winds up and down the slick rock with amazing views in every direction. There are several very steep obstacles along the way but there are go arounds on almost every one on this trail. We wanted to test the 4 wheel drives on one very steep rock face so to be save we put a rope on the front, eased the quads up vertical and tried to slowly crawl up the face. The Polaris made it look the easiest followed closely by the Kawasaki 650I. The Honda Rincon 700 EFI had some trouble but it was in a spot that was a little sandy and the new Can-Am 500 EFI came in last. The Visco-Loc just would not lock in both front wheels.
The last tough spot is called the escalator. It is another steep lions back type of obstacle. Last spring it seamed like it was even steeper, but once you have done it is not nearly as bad as it looks. It will however test your brakes.
We came across some Jeeps along the trail in a couple of different places. They were very entertaining to watch. There was one very tough obstacle that is called the bath tub where a buggy was trying to get through. This looks almost impossible but he made it. Then an old Dodge pick up started in. We all thought no way will he make it because the buggy barley made it. He drove in and right out the other side no problem. As he was at the top he yelled "Old Power".
When we got back to the trucks we said now what? It is still light and we aren’t riding, so we decided to do another lap on Hells Revenge.
What a blast for a warm up run.
