Any day riding is better than a day of working. This day we had Jeff (azgolfer) and Jeff Jr, Zane (zzz) RoyD, Larry Walker & 3 friends, Mike, myself Don (azquadrider). We headed out S/E of Florence Az. I have not been in this area so I was a bit excited as always. I woke up at 2 AM and couldn’t get back to sleep so I just got up. I went over to Insane Zane’s house on the west side of Phoenix to ride with him. I got to his house at 4:15, as I arrived he opened his side gate. I guess he didn’t sleep in as well.
We started out riding in a downpour for about 45 minutes. I found out that my new Frog Togg rain gear is not really rain gear. I guess it is for if there is a mist not a downpour. Oh well at least it was warm. The rain sure helped with keeping the dust down. The rest of the day it sprinkled only a few times. This was an exploratory ride so there was not a plan. Roy hates that, he has to have a plan; Most of the ride was in sand washes going down to the Gila River. It was a blast roosting down the trail on the New Polaris 850 XP playing catch me if you can. We came across some people in 4 wheel drive vehicles at the railroad bridge that said they were going to cross the river and head to the Coke ovens. We told them Steve got washed away about a week ago on his quad trying to cross. Well they tried, the first buggy crossed but the Blazer stalled as he got into the river. The buggy came back after him as the female passenger got out to help hook up a tow strap. They were able to pull it out of the river after a bit of a struggle. The 3rd buggy made it as well. It was very entertaining to watching. I got washed away at the same spot in the spring as well but I had a rope tied to the back of my quad to Jim’s quad so he was able to pull me out.
After the fun Roy took us down a road that was more like a tunnel, than a trail. I have no problem with AZ pinstripes on the quad, but on my helmet??? The trail was so over grown that you had to flatten yourself on the seat so your head was under the handlebars so you could pass under the tree limbs. This area was about 100 yards long. We ended up on top of a hill at the west end of the railroad tunnel. We even saw a railroad truck going down the track. I climbed to the top of the hill for a few photos. As I climbed to the edge of the cliff the wind was so strong that it made my eyes water so much I could hardly see. It was a scary moment to say the least. As I came back to the center of the mountain Zane was there. The view from the top was outstanding.
Next we went down some more washes before doing a hill climb. That was fun. Now we had to find our way back to Kelvin HYW. We took several trails but finally found our way back. At our staging there was a nice short hill climb to have fun testing the awesome ADC of the new 850 Polaris XP. It was awesome.
Another successful day of exploring with friends .
