Dugas Rd W RoyD 11-15-08
Roy D and I went on a exploratory ride off Dugas road Saturday. I think Roy is getting soft. He picked me up at 7:00 AM. Yes I said 7:00AM. Must be because he stopped chewing. Any way we headed off to the east on Dugas road to Pine Mountain. Close to Pine MNt there is a ranch. We could see a deer way down by the ranch. Roy thought there was a loop to the south but the road was a dead end. On our way back from Pine Mnt we came across the same 2 deer about 40 yards from us. I made a bunch of noise getting my camera out and they just stood there.
Next we took a trail almost never traveled but it just came back to the cut off road. Roy had some other trails on his GPS to the N so off we headed. There was a cool trail along a stream but it also dead ended. On our way out of this trail I jumped 4 Javilena’s. Two of them ran right in front of me for about 100 yards. They are amazingly fast.
I saw another trail heading north at the fork in the road so we took it. It lead us out onto the plains. As we were trying out some of the roads I saw a trail way over the N/E that went up the side of the mountain. Sure enough it went to the top. It was steep and loose (lots of big marbles) but not too bad. We stopped near the top to take in the view and Roy’s mascot Sissy Bear climbed a tree for a better look. As we came to the top there was a tent set up. I guess it was a couple of hunters as we were in the trees now. We later saw a Polaris Ranger so that had to be the hunters. They had a cool little trailer they pulled with all their gear. We took the trail until it ended at Hells Hole Tank. From this side we could see into Camp Verde. Another Dead end.
Oh well we better start heading back as our truck was about 20 miles away and it was getting late. Another successful adventure. The good news is we came across a bunch more roads that need to be explored.
